This is a young male, which at this stage of life is "clothed" like a female. Unless things have changed recently in this neck of the woods, only males are legal to hunt .... but, until they are fully developed it is easy for hunters to misidentify females for young males and shoot them. When pheasants were imported from China, they took over the plains states and doomed the once-famed prairie chickens to near extinction. There .... we have the extent of my knowledge about pheasants ....
