Fragile Balance

A small life finding balance among the tangled strings of the osprey nest.

Fragmented Solitude - I.

Is it possible to simplify the forms and be completely content with empty space? And let this space be your imagination. Perhaps isolation isn’t the absence of connection, but the presence of it.  A look within oneself.

The Flooding

The Bear River is flooding and grasslands, pastures along the Forest Street that leading to the bird sanctuary are currently under water.  I have never seen anything like this before and tried to drive as far as possible this evening but at some point I didn't dare to drive through the flooded road and was forced to turn around.

Even though, I couldn't make it to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, I had a great time photographing some of the birds and even a Great Horn Owl this evening.

I also took some photos of flooding pastures and one of them seemed interesting to me and I thought why not create something surreal in black and white.

Life goes on.

December Sketches - II. Canada Geese

They appeared from nowhere, heading south, and I had only a few seconds to decide how to photograph them.

Luckily, I forgot to change my camera settings which were set for overexposure,  and accidentally ended up with a high key minimalistic photo.  To my surprise, I liked the result.

Canada Geese flew past this reservoir where later in winter some brave people will fish on the ice.

Life goes on.

A Loner - II.

He prefers silence and solitude.  On occasion he can be seen around other birds but when the time comes to hunt and feed, a Great Blue Heron will find a quiet secluded place and spend a long time there alone.

Generally, life is good!

A Loner

When I saw this solitary Great Blue Heron standing on the icy river I thought I could get a minimalistic simple photograph which also tells a story; a story about a loner who prefers to hunt and feed far away from other birds.

Generally, life is good!

Mini World - 8. One of Those Days

After a few long weeks I finally was able to get to Bear river.

I hoped that I might find a few Great Blue herons there or perhaps ducks

but Bear river greeted me with silence.  All my friends - the shore birds - left.

At some point I left my car and walked for a long time along the river

looking for ducks and other birds not believing that they were gone.

I thought how it happened that I fell in love with shore birds.

Why I have never looked for different birds? Birds in the fields?

Birds in the forests?

I wasn't interested in them, that is for sure.

Well, the shore birds left Bear river.

Soon Tundra swans would come but they will stay far away from the shore,

no way with my equipment would I get decent pictures of them.

Once Wendell Berry said,

when we no longer know what to do and which way to go, we have begun our real journey.

I want to believe him.

West Land - 32. More on Geese

Geese already chose a leader who will guide them
to the final destination in their migration.
How do they choose a leader is a mystery for me?
I only can guess that geese somehow know
that particular bird is the wisest and the strongest.
