Wild Turkeys in March - II.

Wild Turkey is smart and sensitive bird but it doesn't exactly win over our hearts with its beauty or charm.  

While photographing these interesting birds, I thought that charm and beauty is always in the eye of beholder.  To me these Turkeys are definitely adorable and beautiful.

Wild Turkeys in March - I.

 

I was photographing a flock of chaotic Wild Turkeys in our local park, and nothing much was happening until one adventurous Turkey left the flock and decided to take a short rest in the snow.  

Suddenly it seemed like an interesting idea to take portraits of Turkeys instead of trying and failing to take photos of the entire flock.

This Turkey ended up next to a pine tree with fresh snow that slightly obscured Turkey's beak, but its eyes turned out to be sharp and this is the main thing.

A Wild Turkey bathes in the sun and enjoys a sunny morning.

Life goes on.

Fleeting Independence

A Wild Turkey is not a social bird but it always keeps in a well-organized flock. Even if one Turkey breaks away from the flock and seems to be on its own, it won't be for long.

Thus, the turkey on the photo above, being away from the flock, found itself at a crossroads.  Being  away from others and losing safety was apparently not a good idea.

Turning around and joining the flock is definitely safer.

Wild Turkeys

Every fall I visit our local Beau pond hoping to see Wild Turkeys that love to spend the early morning hours there.  This morning luck was on my side and I met a fairly large flock of Wild Turkeys.

My first photograph of Wild Turkey pleasantly surprised me with its pleasant blur background.

This Turkey decided to leave her flock and walk around, but very soon changed its mind and returned to the flock.  What a pity.  I was going to follow it.

The Wild Turkey is certainly very expressive and has a character.

It would be nice to take a promenade along the paved road and show off in all my glory.

The Male Wild Turkey is Displaying His Beauty

 

This morning I decided to visit our local park and when I arrived I was greeted by Wild Turkeys. The skittish females disappeared in the woods almost immediately  but the male above wasn't in a hurry.  

This guy was displaying his undeniable beauty hoping that one skittish female would be fascinated by his display and will chose him as a mate.

I am sure that this male knew that his display was judged by a few females that were hiding between the trees.

Wild Turkeys, like many species in the chicken family, use a lek display system. Males hang around the lek for weeks in the spring and that allows the females to get a good view of display and choose a male to mate.

Females only need to mate once, and after that they will not have any contact with the male.  The female alone will build a nest, lays eggs, and raises the young.

Generally, life is good!

It's a pure fascination and obsession with Wild Turkeys.
No matter what I head about them, they are still my favorite birds.

Are Wild Turkeys beautiful? Undoubtedly, they are. 
What makes them beautiful?
Their uniqueness!
Feathers, eyes, their elegance - yes, they are elegant- fascinate me.
