On the Country Roads. The Last Light

There was something about this old barn that made me stop.

The tangled tree branches, the fading light, and the small glimmers in the grass felt interesting and slightly mysterious.

On the Country Roads. The Barnyard Cadillac

This old red truck once ruled the county roads—hauling hay, lumber, and even a few joyriding kids.

Now “retired” he tells the barn cats stories of his glory days, waiting for the moment someone realizes he’s got one more adventure left in him.

Generally, life is good.

On the Country Roads

There is not much snow in the valley, but in the mountains winter is in full swing. I feel like I entered true winter today, harsh and cold, but I am glad I did.

Generally, life is good.

Wabi-Sabi. Old Barn

An old barn, the walls are weathered,
No window to catch the light,
The silent rays are frozen.

On the Country Roads. In the Valley

It is unusual to see white barns in the Northern Utah. Usually most of them are a modest brown or loud red color.

Generally, life is good.

On the Country Roads. Old Barn

After long-awaited rains, everything was transformed in an instant, and nature once again sparkled with all sorts of colors.

On the Country Roads - IV.

A few more warm autumn days and next week the temperature will drop and autumn won't not be as friendly as it is now.

This morning I headed into the mountains and drove along the back roads in hope of seeing Turkey Vultures sitting on the fences and "waiting" for me to photograph them but there weren't Vultures around.

But, to my delight, high in the mountains, autumn still had its festive colors.

American Crows.

I have a soft spot for red barns.  This one was hidden behind the trees, only half visible.

Generally, life is good.

Notes to Self. Red Barn

I took this photo out of desperation. No, this is not a joke. The spring flood cut me off from the Bear River MBR and my favorite birds.

Knowing that there was no way I could get to the Bear River, I told myself that there was a big world around me and if I tried hard to discover something interesting in it then my favorite birds could wait.

One of my little "interesting" discoveries was the red barn, very important and festive.

Actually, I like the old dilapidated barns better. There is something very touching and sad about them. Such barns have closed one of the last pages of their lives and retired with dignity.

Unfortunately, there were no old barns around, only important and festive one and at some point it suddenly seemed not so boring, it had its own special charm.

***

Generally, life is good.

On the Country Roads - II.

I will never fully get used to the mountains.  You can't get used to something powerful that takes your breath away.  You can only be in awe.

Life goes on.

Notes to Self. Young Great Horned Owlets

Every time when I am on Antelope Island I am driving to one of Bisons' barns to visit the family of Great Horned Owls and see how their young ones are doing.

The young owls (there are two of them) became pretty big, they fly easily around the barn.

The owlets are always under the supervision of their parents, who will feed them for the next few months and protect them from danger.

This young owl unlike his sibling was awake and active during my last visit.

Sometimes the owlet perched on a rope hanging from the ceiling and watched me.
