Hitch Hikers
I rarely visit Antelope Island in the winter. It's usually deserted and windy.
I saw only bisons who were surrounded by birds.
The bisons did not seem to mind the hitch hikers on their backs,
I am not sure they even noticed the birds.
Later I will learn that certain species of birds ride on the backs of Bisons
and feed on the insects they find in the Bison’s fur.
European Starlings are among those birds.

The gnomes have friends who keep them company in the winter. A frugal story about friendship.
ReplyDeleteInteresting companionship and wonderful photos. :)
ReplyDeleteReally nice series. I would imagine that it is a mutually beneficial relationship with the bisons getting rid of some of their insect tormentors - commensalism at its best.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures, specially the first. I remembered the Great Plains of the western movies full of bisons.
ReplyDeleteA hug.
Sometime when you are feeling really ambitious, Kaya, you should set up a blind on the island .... you might find other "critters" would be cooperative about being photographed.
ReplyDeleteThese are super photographs ....
Bien acompañado, están los bisontes, aunque la compañía sea bastante interesada. Mirándolo bien, también los bisontes se libran de soportar las picaduras de los insectos.

PS - Four people have arrived at the hospital, injured...
ReplyDeleteHermosa visión a través de tus fotografías la de esos poderosos animales siempre rodeados de su corte a pájaros. Resulta bello su contraste sobre el terreno nevado.
ReplyDeleteUn abrazo,
I'm sorry, I always repeat the same, I love your nature works.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is another wonderful work.
I can't say anything else.
Hugs my dear.
Мощь и легкость в одной фотографии!

ReplyDeleteFrom this symbiotic relationship between the bison and the birds, all benefit.
You have also benefited by getting some amazing, in our eyes, photographs .. Very good.

Muy buenas tomas, Kaya, que bien has aislado los bisontes y la aves dándolas todo el protagonismo sin sin sacarlas de su entorno.
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
Wow - what fabulous shots!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are so cool! I've got a big smile right now. :-)
ReplyDeleteA symbiotic relationship for sure. - Margy
ReplyDeleteMy favourite photo is the lone bison with one bird on his back while the other birds fly by!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this very much. I now live on the plains of Alberta, Canada, where such creatures were a food staple for the original inhabitants of the area. We've often passed a turn-off heading to a place called Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump because the men would chase a herd until it fell over and all the big critters died. Made me sad when I first learned of it, but of course those people had to have food, and their ingenuity is amazing.
