Out of Nest and Into the World With Mama and Dad

There is a nursery right now in some parts of Bear River,  two more female Western Grebes are sitting on their floating nests and incubating their eggs.

The female Grebe I was watching for a few weeks is already has her young ones and in the early mornings she takes them for a swim.

The chicks are tiny but very curious. From time to time they are so eager to see what is happening in the world.

The necks of these chicks aren't long yet but long enough to keep them straight up and see what is around.

The male Grebe is always near his family, never letting the female with her chicks out of his sight.  He even chased away aggressively a few Grebes who were passing by.

  2. Love these photos - ...so cool when they carry their young on their backs. Have you ever seen american coot babies. They are so cute - i happened to be lucky enough several years ago to catch them at a lake and get their photo before their odd little feathers changed.
