Ospreys Saga - I.

Yesterday I decided to travel North within Weber County hoping to find any bird I would meet along my way. It didn't take a long time when I noticed a large Osprey nest made mostly of sticks on the tall pole.

At the beginning I saw only a female Osprey on the nest and had to wait when one of her offsprings would show up.  From time to time a few little ones stuck their heads out but the female immediately pushed them back into the nest.

Eventually, one brave baby showed up and stayed for a while by his mama side.

The female Osprey lays one to four eggs in the spring. I am not sure how many babies were in the nest, I saw only three.

The little one is not flying yet.  It will take sixty day after hatching when he will make his first flight.

The male Osprey was around but not very close, he was watching carefully the nest and then he flew to the nest and joined the female, just for a few minutes.

The male does all hunting, he brings food to the female who would feed her babies. If something would happen to the female the male Osprey would not know how to feed his babies and they would not survive. It's very sad!

The female is checking on her babies.

The nest was built in the open space on the tall pole for easy approach and far from the ground to protect offsprings from predators as raccoons.

Usually, the male find the elevated site for the nest before the female will arrive.

The Osprey is the only hawk that eats exclusively only fish.

A few miles away from the nest there is Pineview Reservoir and it has plenty of small and large fish.  My guess is that the male Osprey flies there for fishing and then brings fish to the female.

Generally, life is good!

    1. I think that this nest was used for several years by ospreys. The nest had a metal structure at the bottom and probably was specially made for ospreys. I don't know how many pairs of ospreys are around Pineview Reservoir 😄

  4. The truth is that you have a great capacity and patience to capture the images of birds at the right time, with great clarity. Really precious.
You also share with us your knowledge about that world of birds that we do not know so much
    Congratulations
    Have a nice weekend.

  5. La hembra se ve que está pendiente de ellos. Como ocurre con los niños, siempre hay uno algo más rebelde y se resiste a cumpir las órdenes. Le mueve mucho la curiosidad.

  7. The nest is hard to reach. The birds have sharp eyes. A cyclical corner of life.

  8. La curiosidad de los jóvenes. Por mucha protección que le den sus padres, ellos siempre estarán dispuestos a hacerse notar.
    Un abrazo y cuídate.
