The Female American Avocet and Her Young Ones

The rain was heavy and the female Avocet tried to keep her chicks dry and warm under her feathers.

As luck would have it, the rain didn't stop for a long time and the soaking wet female patiently stood in one spot for almost half and hour. That was motherly love, tender and caring.

As soon as the rain stopped the chicks immediately left their mother and went to explore the world.

The female is very concerned about behavior of her chicks.

There is always a time for preening and making yourself beautiful.

This mischievous Avocet decided to walk among the rocks but quickly abandon this venture.

This summer we don't have many Avocets at Bear River.  We were hit hard by  drought and some areas of river are nothing but scorched earth and dry vegetation. Perhaps, this is one of reasons why some Avocets didn't favor the Bear River this year.

Generally, life is good!
