Behind the Scenes - III. Girls' Day Out

I used to wonder why female Ring-necked pheasants always hang out together, and where on earth their knight in shining feathers was.

Surely, there should be at least one macho male to protect them? Turns out—nope.

The male is far too busy yelling at rival males and defending his territories. So the ladies figured it out for themselves: forget Prince Charming, just bring your girlfriends.

With more eyes and ears in the group, they can spot trouble faster—and "share" the latest pheasant gossip.

Generally, life is good.

Behind the Scenes - II. A Curious Meeting

Wildflowers, sunshine, and one very puzzled male Mule deer who was enjoying some "me time". He seemed perfectly content in his solitude, while I was left wondering why the deer was alone.

I think he might have just found a quiet spot to rest in the flowers away from the herd. Deer like to pick safe, concealed areas to rest.

Young bucks often separate from their mothers and siblings as they mature, spending more time alone while they figure out their own territory.

Anyway, meeting this male Mule deer was unexpected—at least on my part.

Generally, life is good.

Behind the Scenes - I. " You Never Know I'm Here"

The other morning at Bear River MBR, I had the pleasure of meeting one of nature’s greatest comedians—the American Bittern I met at the same spot last year, who certainly knew how to strike a pose.

Out of the tall grass, a long neck suddenly uncoiled, followed by a curious pair of eyes. The Bittern had clearly spotted me—but instead of flying away, he froze.

He stretched out his long neck, as if to say,“Who, me? I’m just another stalk of grass, nothing to see here!” For a bird known for its camouflage skills, I think he overdid it but I am grateful for his performance.
