Notes to Self. In Interesting Company

I recently complained to a friend that photography seemed to be slipping away from me—no inspiration, no ideas, only a quiet sense of despair.

My friend simply said, “Be patient. Soon you’ll find yourself in interesting company.”

Today, a huge, heavy book arrived in the mail - full of extraordinary photographs by American photographer Saul Leiter.  It was a wonderful and surprising gift from my friend.

Of course, it took me several pages to understand what my friend meant.

Saul Leiter lived in the same New York apartment for sixty-three years, rarely traveled, and created his remarkable images close to home—just two blocks away.

He noticed what others overlooked, building his own world without worrying how it might be received.

Yes, it is true that I found myself in the company of a brilliant artist and photographer, in a very inspiring company, where the world you create can be entirely your own.

Perhaps, Saul Leiter was right after all: photographs are waiting for you everywhere. You just have to learn to see them.

Generally, life is good.
