American Bald Eagles at Bear River and Farmington Bay

In February I am always looking for American Bald Eagles but very often I come home without any photo of these majestic and powerful birds because they are either far away or hiding somewhere.

Last Sunday I was lucky to see this Bald Eagle in the middle of the Bear river but he was far away.  When a bird is far away my lens has a difficult time to focus.

That is exactly what happened with this eagle. Thirty eight photos I took of the Bald Eagle were blur and only one (above) miraculously came out sharp. Later I cropped the sharp photo (hate to do that) to bring the eagle closer.

Last February at Farmington Bay was different. There were a few Bald Eagles hanging around. I even could get close to one of them (very unusual with Bold Eagles) and didn't have a problem with focusing.

Winter is about to lose its grip and soon the Bald Eagles will make their way to their nesting grounds. The arrival of birds of spring is just weeks away now, some of them will arrive to the marshes even sooner.

  1. It seems uncertain which way to go in the water path, though it can fly in any direction.

  3. Living near the confluence of three significant rivers -- the Mississippi / the Minnesota / the Saint Croix -- which all have areas of open water year-round, seeing eagles is common here .... but, they are such majestic and wary birds it is a real treat each and every time. As the Supremes sing: "Some things you never get used to ...."

You truly are a fortunate photographer, Kaya, when you capture one on "film" ....
