When Taking Off Goes Wrong

Seeing a Great Blue Heron on the log in the middle of the field was a little bit odd but thrilling. It was getting warm and I thought that the Heron will not stay for a long time there but he appeared so unpredictable. First, he spent forty minutes on the log cleaning himself and sometimes just standing and doing nothing.

The log was long but Heron balanced himself very well on it.

Then after forty minutes he started to act restless and moved to the end of the log.

Turning around and ready to take flight.

In a few seconds he supposed to be in the air. It was expected but...

it didn't happen, the Heron suddenly slipped down very softly. Another unpredictable move.

Apparently, taking flight is not always smooth.

  3. You and your camera are a force to be reckoned with, your patience is a source of inspiration for me. The photos are awesome and I love how you transitioned us from beginning to end. The "failure-to-launch" was a surprise ending I did not expect...even with your title leading the way.

  4. A boyhood friend and I once encountered a bird which could not fly. We brought it to a clergyman who was a well-known hobbyist/ornithologist. He declared it a black-crowned night heron which was molting. He kept the bird a while; it eventually recovered; it was set free. I would hazard a guess this is what was affecting your heron.

    Excellent photographs, Kaya ....
