Notes to Self. Beyond Color

Huntsville, Pelican Beach, July 2026.
The strength of small plants.

Lately, I've wondered why black-and-white photographs leave a more lasting impression on my memory than color ones.

This post is just a reflection and an attempt to understand why.

Memory simplifies reality.  We rarely remember a place exactly as it was. We remember fragments: an empty road, an old abandoned barn, a tree with interesting shape, the feeling we experienced.  Other details disappear.

Black and white photography does similar: it removes uncertainty.  What remains in monochrome is strangely simplified. It doesn't simply remove color, monochrome removes some of photograph's answers and doing so, it gives you the room to remember, imagine and feel.

Generally, life is good.
